Hon. Oryem Okello and H.E. Mohammad Javad Zarrif signing the Memorandum of understanding
H.E. Mohammad Javad Zarrif; the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who is on a two day working visit to Uganda has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Uganda on behalf of the government of Iran. Hon. Oryem Okello, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs signed on behalf of Uganda Government.
The MOU on Regular Diplomatic Consultations will emphasize diplomatic relationships as well as identify the priority projects between the two countries. The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of State in Charge of Regional Cooperation; Hon Asuman Kiyingi, Director Regional Cooperation Amb. Nathan Ndoboli and other senior officials from the Ministry. Also present was H.E. Mohammad's delegation which was composed of the Director General of the Central Bank of Iran, the Deputy Minister of Labor among others.
The delegation was warmly received and welcomed by Hon. Okello Oryem; who in his opening remarks said that Uganda and Iran enjoy excellent bilateral relations. He also mentioned that Uganda shares the view to generate nuclear energy for the good of developing the country in terms of medicine and agriculture. In that regard, H.E. Mohammad made it clear that Iran has no interest in nuclear weapons, but rather only the peaceful use of this technology. Therefore we look forward to partnering with Iran on those fronts of Agro-processing, Health and trade since they are well advanced in these technologies, so as to expand our cooperation.
The Iranian Minister in his address stated that he was happy to be in Uganda and grateful for the wonderful hospitality of the people. He was especially impressed by the good meeting they had with the president and his wide history and knowledge of scripture as Faith is an important part of Iranian values. He also congratulated Uganda on having a Ugandan as the president of the UN General Assembly saying that it makes them proud to associate with us.
